A great golf trip is not just about the course. It is about the tee time that does not feel rushed, the caddie who knows the greens better than the yardage book, and the dinner reservation waiting after the round. I have planned golf trips to Scotland, Ireland, and some of the finest resorts in the US, and the best ones always have one thing in common. Every detail outside the golf was handled just as carefully as the golf itself.
Scotland and Ireland
Scotland is the trip every serious golfer eventually wants to take. St Andrews, the home of golf, sits alongside courses like Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, each with its own character and its own weather to respect. Ireland offers something wilder. Ballybunion and Lahinch sit right on the coast, with wind that changes the entire game and views that make you forget your score. Both countries reward travelers who build in enough time between rounds to actually see the country they flew to.
Pebble Beach and Bandon Dunes
Closer to home, Pebble Beach remains the trip that never disappoints. The par-3 seventh hole alone is worth the flight. Bandon Dunes in Oregon has become a pilgrimage site for golfers who want walking-only, caddie-led rounds through some of the most dramatic dune landscapes in the country. Both destinations get booked out well in advance, especially in peak season, which means early planning matters more than almost anything else.
Plan for the Whole Group
The mistake I see most often is treating the golf as the entire trip. A spouse or partner who does not play, a group with mixed skill levels, an evening with nothing planned after the eighteenth hole. These are the moments that make or break how everyone remembers the week. I build in spa time, wine tastings, and excursions that give non-golfers just as much reason to look forward to the trip. A golf vacation done well works for the whole group, not just the four people carrying clubs.
