Do you have a “must-do” on vacation?

For some travelers, they always want to visit a museum. For others, it’s sparkly souvenir shopping. For me, it’s a food tour!

After visiting more than 30 different countries around the world, I’ve taken an immersive food tour in just about each one. Because one of the best things about going on vacation is indulging in authentic eats.

But it’s not just about the (delicious!) dining.

It’s about seeing how other people live, where their customs come from—and how their cultures stay alive today.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

One of my hands-down favorite food tours was a whirlwind jaunt through Italy with a fabulous private guide.

She took us to a fifth-generation cheese stop, where giant wheels of cheese were stacked nearly to the rafters. We wandered through the stalls of a former meat packing plant-turned-food hall, where the aromas from different vendors made me salivate.

We ended the day at a tiny restaurant, built into the side of a hill made up of broken bits of Roman amphora, or ancient ceramic bottles. The restaurant used to be a wine-bottling operation, so strewn around the interior were lots of bottles and wine memorabilia from its past. In Italy, everything has a story, and history has a way of worming itself into the present—even at the dinner table!

Everything I tasted that day was knock-your-socks-off scrumptious—but the laughter and stories (told in rusty Italian and broken English) we swapped with vintners, cheesemongers, and restaurateurs was even more nourishing.
